About Attune

What is Attunement Process?

Attunement Process is a specialised way of working with and understanding non-verbal communication in diverse contexts. It was developed by Rachel Porter as a means to access and understand the fundamentals of communication and relationship in a way that opens up connectivity between people, even in the most challenging circumstances.

How it started?

The first formal training was in 2019, but in fact I’ve been training people and working with this approach for over 10 years. This is a unique and effective way of working with people who cannot use words or conventional, codified communication. Such client groups can be difficult to understand, teach, talk to and engage in creative activities. Attunement Process provides therapists, care workers, pre-school workers, teachers, occupational therapists etc with tools to enter the worlds of their clients and facilitate development of interpersonal skills, creativity, self-esteem and improvement of challenging behaviours.

How it works?

Attunement Process can also be utilised more generally for deepening expertise in all kinds of communications work if heightened interpersonal skills are required. It is not a form of therapy in itself, but it can be a therapeutic practice and enhance therapeutic work. Participants will become aware of their own therapeutic presence and instincts and how to utilise them more consciously in their care-giving practices, creative facilitation work and general workplace communication.

What is the theory underpinning
Attunement Process?

Attunement Process was developed by Rachel through her practice and research in drama and movement therapy and physical/visual theatre. The pioneering therapeutic work of Marion Lindkvist (the Sesame approach) is at the heart of Attunement Process. Other influences are Sherborne developmental movement and Intensive Interaction. In the more advanced levels of Attunement Process, we refer to theories of child development from Daniel Stern and Colwyn Trevarthen, amongst others. We examine the underlying mechanics, instincts and tools of attunement.

Clients and Applications

Clients and applications include: profound autism; challenging behaviour; multiple and profound learning difficulties; children under five; mothers and babies; elderly people with all forms of cognitive decline.

This work is beneficial for care workers, teachers, parents, carers, medical staff, support workers, occupational therapists, arts therapists and psychotherapists. Attunement Process enables people to work therapeutically and creatively with pre- and post- verbal client groups. In a broader sense, Attunement Process can help people to develop their ability to attune to verbal clients and enhance their non-verbal communication skills in all environments.
